All still so very relevant.

----------------------

Dear Nat—

Quit thinking you must have short hair because you have a long face. You will not look like a horse with long hair, I promise. Also. Wear shorts. You live in Arizona and it’s hot. You do not have unsightly legs, you’re just being ridiculous and clichéd with your needless body image issues.

So. Now that the trivial matters are out of the way.

Your dad always said he pitied those who never got past talking about the glory days of high school—because life is supposed to get better after high school. And I can promise you that it does. You were in a hurry to get out, and that was the right choice. Ten years after you graduate, you’re in a life more fabulous than you ever fathomed possible or thought you deserved.

Nat. To make a very long story short—you’re a rock star. You always have been, you simply let insecurity and fear own too much of your heart and your interactions with others. Quit that soon, because you’ll lose years of your life driving people away until you figure out how to both treat and communicate with them in the spirit of sensitivity and respect. You’re not a nasty person, but let’s be honest—sometimes you’re not a real joy to be around either. Never substitute being clever for being kind. Keep plugging away at self-improvement, you’ll get there. Once you turn the corner and figure out how to love yourself, the number of incredible people in your life will improve exponentially. With years of practice, you’ll transform yourself into a truly sensitive, thoughtful, loyal friend. This will become one of your defining characteristics and people respect this about you.

You’ll learn resiliency as you encounter professional, social, romantic, and spiritual setbacks. You’ll learn to find the silver lining. Don’t focus so much on what’s wrong all the time; find the right and chase after it. In good news, there isn’t true regret, tragedy, or heartbreak looming on the horizon—just the continual heat felt from being in the refiner’s fire. Nat—it’s nothing you can’t handle, so don’t be so afraid. There’s no need to fear life; embrace it.

You’ll learn to love yourself by being completely alone. And alone doesn’t mean lonely dear girl—there’s a key difference. Alone means far from home, able to navigate life with a competence beyond your years. Instead of constantly checking your phone waiting for it to ring, you’ll gleefully check the increasing balance of your savings account and feel like you’ve really made it in the world. You’ll travel… a lot. Yes, because you want to, but also because you can. You learn to make things happen instead of waiting for them to happen to you.

The only true life regret you have at 28 is that you didn’t figure these things out earlier on. But it’s okay; you’d be a different person today if you’d figured it out sooner. And truth be told, you wouldn’t trade the today version of you for a different one. (You worked hard to smooth out all those rough edges!)

And that’s not just a silver lining, but a platinum one.
NatAttackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04165394783070027371noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27058618.post-44931167325732597972018-02-05T18:47:00.002-05:002018-02-05T18:47:54.927-05:00What Remy is up to

Nat's note:

This morning we were all ready to leave for work. Remy pointed at the wedding portrait on our wall and said, "Dad!" She pointed again and said "Mom!" She then pointed at Paul and said, "Dad!" Then pointed at me and said, "Mom!" It's starting to connect in her brain and it's fascinating to watch.

She then pointed at her shirt, pants, and socks and called them out by name.

It was this funny little moment where Remy decided to show off her words without prompting. She's evolving!

I had an easy pregnancy. The
kind of pregnancy you don’t tell many women about because you know they’re
suffering and you’re…just getting big. Call it my height, call it the way my
body handles excess weight, I have no idea what to call it, except easy. It
wasn’t until Remy started getting stronger with her kicks that I could truly
believe something was happening to my body. And with an anterior placenta, I
didn’t feel kicks until Week 20 and they didn’t get especially sharp until
nearly the end.

Pregnancy (easy as it is or
not) is l o n g. Basically 10 months of time that seems to stretch into
eternity. Maybe your first feels longer than subsequent kids (ask me after I
get pregnant again, huh?) with anticipation and anxiety duking it out for space
front and center in the brain. I was pregnant from late August to early May.

My official due date was
Friday, May 6, 2016. First babies are historically late, and especially so in
my family. I worked in the office clear up to my due date with the intention of
working from home until the baby came. I had myself convinced Remy would come
at least a week late, and for once in my life I actually believed the thing I
told myself to make sure my expectations were appropriately set.

I worked through 40w 1d, left
my office in a usable place, and went home to wait. So confident I was that I
had plenty of time, we purchased tickets to see Avengers: Civil War on Tuesday
$6 night. (Not that it was a movie I really wanted to see, it was a just
because we could.) Paul found out he’d passed the Oregon State Bar about a
month before and was looking for work. So there we were with nothing to do but
wait to deliver this little gamechanger.

SUNDAY, May 08

I felt very few Braxton Hicks
contractions on the ramp up to the big show. So Sunday morning when I woke up,
ironically on Mother’s Day, I knew something different was happening in my
body. I was unsettled (and lazy) enough that I sent Paul to our 10:00 church
alone. I dozed off and on and wrote a letter to my soon-to-be-born baby girl.
(I also forced Paul to write one. I’ll get it posted for posterity’s sake if
it’s the last thing I do.) Contractions continued off and on throughout the day
and I knew they were building into the main event—I just had no idea they would
go on so long. Wanting to get out of
the house later in the afternoon, and wanting to have some hearty food in my
system, we had dinner at Outback Steakhouse and then wandered a TJ Maxx. At
this point I was timing my contractions and we put a preemptive call in to my
OB to ask how we should handle things so he wasn’t surprised by a middle of the
night page. Some instructions were exchanged but it was essentially a ‘wait it
out.’

So wait we did. We went on a
long walk in the park near our house (to speed labor along). I curb walked (to
speed labor along). Eventually we went home and to bed where I had a horrific
night. I hardly slept; in a middle-of-the-night conversation I told Paul I
would wait it out at home until Albertsons opened at 5:00 so we could have a
bagel on the way. (Clearly I was very worried about all the reading I’d done
re: starving during delivery because they don’t allow you to eat once you
arrive.)

MONDAY, May 09

I grew restless and
uncomfortable enough that I looked up what time the Starbucks on the way to the
hospital opened. 4:00 AM, hallelujah! My
whole plan had been to wait out as much of labor at home so I could just show
up at the hospital (dilated at like a 4 maybe?), get a quick epidural, and like
my sisters have super quick, medicated deliveries. Easy peasy, right? Stay
tuuuuuuuuuned.

So we’re in the Starbucks
drive-through about 4:15 in the morning. (Paul needed a shower you see.) The
cashier at the window asked why we were up so early and seemed delighted when
Paul told him we were heading to the hospital to have a baby. Sadly, this did
not mean we got free breakfast. I ate my bagel and we rushed down to Meridian
Park Hospital.

It was quiet on the floor
when we arrived and I was checked into a room. A nurse did a dilation check and
delivered the bad news. I was only
dilated to a one. Uno. Nine inches from delivery. Oof. They let me stay for
a few hours and as I wasn’t progressing any, I got the boot. Plus a shot of
morphine to deal with the pain, but the boot nonetheless. Paul drove me home to
sleep and wait out my ensuing dilation. BUT TROUBLE FIRST. My body was already
on its way to fairly forcefully rejecting the morphine. No sleep for me; I
writhed in bed for a few hours until the 1:00pm appointment Paul had been able
to set up with the OB. Not sure why I had a barf bag in my hand on the drive,
but it came in handy as I threw up everything in my system before we got to the
doctor’s.

I’m clearly in pain slash
distress at the doctor’s and I’m dilated all the way to a 2. A two guys! 1:30 in the afternoon Monday.
I already feel like I’ve been in labor forever but we trek back to the
hospital. Taking the most efficient route would normally have been the
preferred way, but driving absurdly windy roads had me throwing up anything I’d
managed to put down. I’m so uncomfortable. And tired.

But we’re checked in again to
the hospital and clearly on the road to having a baby. I need to get myself
dilated to a 4 so they’ll break my water and give me an epidural. A few hours
pass and I’m at the magical threshold. 4:00 in the afternoon; more than
24-hours after contractions first start. I’m set up with a catheter, have my
water broken (which is easy to explain but probably not too-family friendly;
just imagine it’s a balloon that needs to be popped), and an epidural ready to
be put in.

Before you have your first
epidural, you’re terrified of all the things that can go wrong. You’ve read
things, you’ve heard things. But at this point, the delivery I was sure I was
going to have (induced) was out the window. The doctor putting the epidural
into my spine was named Dr. Payne. These are the things you can’t make up but
give you ample opportunity to joke about to distract from the pain. Epidurals
can only be placed in-between contractions so on a short break between that
never-ending gift that keeps on giving, a long needle was placed in my back and
a pain-blocking magical potion introduced pretty immediately.

I’m beyond jazzed at this
point. I’m pain-free, I don’t have to get up to use the bathroom, and I’m en
route to getting that baby out of my body and into my life. It was a joyous
45-minutes.

And then it all went south.

The next few hours were an
intensifying reentry of contractions. My body started rejecting the epidural.
First the right side. Eventually the left. Dr. Payne adjusted the dosage
flowing through the tubes. He gave me two new epidurals from scratch. He eventually
told me there was nothing else he could do. Dr. Pain indeed. It looked like I was going to deliver this
baby naturally.

TUESDAY, May 10

Contractions continued to
grow in intensity and frequency. For the next ten hours (6PM-4AM), I
experienced a contraction roughly every two-and-a-half minutes. Unprepared to
deal with natural child birth, I lasted about six seconds into each contraction
before a panic attack began and I was unable to breathe as the pain washed back
and forth. For hours, I felt helpless. My full mental faculties were intact and
I knew something was wrong. I was anxious to do something, anything differently. I asked the nurses seriously what my options
were; I was ready to have a c-section. It was truly horrible. In between
contractions I was so thirsty. Paul (probably rightfully) rationed my intake
because he didn’t want me throwing up.

I’ll keep the trauma of those
eight hours fairly limited as I don’t want to talk myself out of having another
baby. The short of a verrrrrrrry long night is that my body was dialated to a 9
for hours on end (with contractions to match) but a piece of my cervix was
blocking the birth canal for the baby to descend. At 4AM the doctor showed up
with a plan. I would start the pushing process, and he would use his hobbit
hands to manually move that piece of cervix. That process took about two hours
and was as comfortable as you can imagine. Then, THEN, the real work of pushing
could begin. As painful and difficult as pushing was, it was the change my body
(and brain!) needed. The time between each contraction/push was the mental rest
I needed to gear up for the next push, which finally felt progressive.

Pushing (never forget this is
a natural birth) proceeded for another two hours, though it didn’t feel nearly
that long. Paul stood on my left and held one of my legs, a nurse on my right
with the other. Machines started beeping, alerting everyone present that the baby
wasn’t getting the oxygen she needed. They quickly gave me an oxygen mask and I
struggled to use it. It felt too small for my face and I alternated breathing
from it and normally. The baby was still in distress and things flew into quick
action as I was given an episiotomy and they baby was vacuumed out of me.

7:37 AM and our baby girl is
HERE. They put her on my chest and she has a full head of dark hair. It’s quickly noticed that she’s not breathing and she’s squirreled
away to the in-room incubator while my OB worked to stitch me up. I cry out as
a reminder that I have no numbing pain medication, and the doctor and nurse
pass a look. I’m shot up with a local anesthetic and I cry the whole time; it’s
painful, but it’s over. I cry because
it was so hard, and so utterly terrible, and I’m alone. Paul is with Remy first
in our room, and later as she’s moved to the fetal nursery/NICU as they work to
stabilize her. It’s a surreal feeling to experience such a lengthy affair and have
nothing to show for it. I spend the next hour alone as the nurses work to clean
me and the room up. Paul comes back and fills me in on what they’ve been doing
to Remy to stabilize her. We order lunch. Eat lunch. Parents, without a baby. The
most horrific pain in my life transpired, and nothing (yet) to show for it.

There are very few pictures of us in the hospital. In hindsight, I think both Paul and I were so traumatized by what happened that we didn't wish to record it. We don't have a single picture of the three of us; and I regret that deeply. I spent a total of three nights (including the overnight of laboring) before we went home. My mom drove straight from SLC and was with us a for a few minutes on the second night and I didn't leave my room until early the third night when we took a small walk around the OB floor.
NatAttackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04165394783070027371noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27058618.post-12302795642097449052018-01-05T00:24:00.000-05:002018-01-05T00:27:32.358-05:00On the birth of my new cooking blogI just counted the actual posts, and I've written on this blog a total of 12, TWELVE, times since moving to Portland six years ago. The death of blogging isn't a burden carried on my shoulders alone; in fact, there isn't a single blog I routinely follow anymore when for years there were dozens. We went short form with Twitter or visual with Instagram. We went the quicker, easier route.

Tonight we rewatched The Big Sick, which is 100% a movie you should watch. The lead character is semi-forced to give up his family to be with the woman he loves. During a pivotal scene in the movie, I told Paul I was glad neither of us had to give much up to love the other. This is the point in my writing where I blame Paul for my not blogging. Thanks for your love Paul, how could you let me not chronicle the last six pivotal years of my life? Geez, that guy.

Okay, jokes. I didn't blog the 18 months before I met him and I haven't blogged the last 4 years+ we've been married. That's on me. And I'm so sad about it, but only because I got sucked down a wormhole of reading old posts the other night and I realized I miss the effort of writing for non-professional reasons. Where I can throw out most grammar and punctuation rules and simply write as it makes sense to me. (True story: 10 years ago when asked why I should get hired I told the hiring manager "I write a really great email." 8 years into that job, said hiring manager told me that statement and the confidence behind it is what earned me a business card with their company name on it.)

Last bizarro thought for the night. Neither Paul nor I are interested in full scale cooking. I like to tell people we're 'great assemblers,' which is short-hand for lazy with a side of 'we mostly like to eat out.' In the last year we've gotten much better about having food on hand at home to eat (because Remy goes to bed at 6:30 and we live next to nothing good to eat and we're too lazy to leave the house in search of food). There are a handful of frozen Costco products we keep on hand that we can quickly throw in the oven and pat ourselves on the back for having a home-cooked meal. (My primary favorite being chicken cordon bleu and a side of broccoli.) Someone recommend a blog for me that's THOSE kind of meals. Since a cursory search of the interweb crushed my dream of finding "easy" meals that require 5 ingredients or less, I shall be forced to start that blog on my own.

At least this will give me a purpose. Riiiiiiiight?

And like all cooking blogs, the wind-up to the actual recipe is four paragraphs too long when all you want is the photo and the ingredients and not some four-paragraph story about how this recipe came to be. Oye. I hate myself.

Tonight's assembled dinner: TACOS

Ground beef previously cooked (from frozen!) in an Instant Pot

Cook yourself tortilla with melted cheese on it

Pre-made pico de gallo

Add some spinach

Add some avacado

WAHLA. Pat for yourself on the back for making dinner. I know I do.

NatAttackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04165394783070027371noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27058618.post-69649011760601743272018-01-03T00:18:00.000-05:002018-01-03T00:18:11.375-05:002018 is the new 2008It was the moment Paul started watching a YouTube compilation of people jumping into trampolines filled with stuff that I threw off the blanket, stood up from my perpetually-reclined position on the couch and told him, "I need to do something productive."

This, plus some gentle nudging from ye old bestie of yore about resurrecting the blog and WAH-LA. I make no promises, but perhaps the evenings of 2018 can be filled with a little more night type clickity-clack and a little less self loathing while playing Two Dots and simultaneously wanting to beat the level and hurry up and waste all my lives in the hope of doing something else.

So here we are. Blogging like it's 2008, which feels like yesterday, but tonight I cooked frozen ground beef in an Instant Pot in 20 minutes, so it's the future! Quit living in the past Nat! (Except we also watched Die Hard 2 tonight which was made in 1990, so I continue to be a walking contradiction.)

Today was my first full day back at work after the holiday, which wasn't all too terrible. By the calculations I did yesterday, I worked all of six full days in December between our glorious week-long Hawaiian hiatus and the speed of business that gets done during the winter holidays. Big business, man! (I'm loving it.) ((Also, I got a new job, having left my old nearly-there-a-decade job, which is a loooooong soap opera which should really be a telenovela.))

Our biggest accomplishment of 2017 was several substantial payments made directly to the principal on our mortgage. Today I plotted the number of years we've now cut our loan to in this mortgage amoritization calculator in Excel (spoiler: a downloadable version is at the very bottom of the article). Pay down principal as early and as often as you can folks. Our goal is to pay off the house before Remy hits High School.

THIS IS WHO I'VE BECOME. You used to come for off-the-wall associations and a creative turn of phrase, and now you're dialing in for mortgage tips and rundowns of a run-of-the-mill Tuesday from a middle-aged working mother. SOMEONE DECORATE MY HOUSE WITH MORE WHITE SPACE SO I CAN TURN BLOGGING INTO A BONAFIDE CAREER ALREADY.

Okysmoke. That's enough for now, let's not set the bar too high.NatAttackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04165394783070027371noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27058618.post-12906490141715241792017-01-12T22:42:00.000-05:002017-01-12T22:42:37.731-05:002016: The Recap

Guys. 2016 was a game changer. A total and utter game changer. 2015 was full of world travel, educational advancement and baby prep, but in 2016 it actually happened. The photos below were posted to Instagram in 2016. They are the most liked of all the images posted and in an effort to have some kind of family record (because 2011 through now is a tumbleweed blowing across your computer screen) let's recap the year:

After 42-hours of raw, medication free labor, our Remy girl came into the world. My birth story deserves its own post (fingers crossed I'll follow-through) but it was dramatic, traumatic, and Paul and I agreed we wouldn't talk about future kids or future labors for quite some time. The short story is my body didn't absorb the epidural narcotics, a piece of the cervix was blocking the birth canal so I was dilated to an 8 for 7+ hours (middle of the night), hyperventilated every contraction, pushed for 3 hours, had a baby who wasn't breathing and it was just real dramatic like. The photo above was several hours after birth when we were reunited. So much hair on that little head!

For Halloween I wanted to do a costume fairly low-key that had high impact but didn't require us to invest a fortune (because babies are fickle and only want to wear a costume for minutes at a time). Hot glue gun cotton balls to a beanie and add a dollar store pair of reading glasses (lenses removed) to a sweater, brooch, and dress combo and wah-la! We sure love our little old lady.

I decided it was cheaper (and more fun!) to fly Alaina out to shoot our family photos than to pay someone in town, so for two short days in November she came for a visit. We spent one afternoon taking family photos in front of the Portland skyline and at Cathedral Park by the St. John's bridge. I'll absolutely always treasure this photo of me and Remy -- it's about the only one where I have nice hair!

This photo is the very first full-face photo of Remy we posted to social media. In it we also announced her full name, weight (8 lbs 8 ounces), height (20.75 in), and a good look at that very full, very dark head of hair.

After visiting Santa at the mall (wherein we paid an obscene amount of money for a reservation so we didn't have to wait in line) I saw this festive setup in Pottery Barn. We quickly set Remy on the couch and snapped this gorgeous keeper of a photo. I'm still waiting for Pottery Barn to return my phone call about including this image in next year's catalog.

This family-of-three shot is one of my ultimate favorites from Alaina's shoot--it made it onto the backside of our 2016 Christmas card as well. I posted it on a Friday wherein I got some really bad news at work that rocked me back a step (nothing super personal, account and client news) but I posted this photo with a caption of how excited I was to go home and spend time with these best friends of mine. Being a full-time working mom also deserves its own post I think. (Add it to the list.)

A baby in a pumpkin! I mean come. on. I fully anticipated Remy would cry when we put her into a cold, wet pumpkin wearing only a diaper. She didn't, because our baby is the most even-keeled happy baby there ever was. (Oh, we also put a dish towel in there.) We put a few decorations up on our porch once Sunday after church and snapped this picture. There are about a dozen in the set and they're all ridiculously cute.

Remy loooooooooooooves the bath. Like holy smokes that girl would be happy to bathe every night. Somewhere mid-Fall we started putting her in the bathtub with one of us and she's never happier than when she's splashing in the tub. This photo was the second night she got to bathe in our main bathroom--the first night she learned that splashing has cause and effect.

Christmas Eve we took a redye flight to Bermuda. I wanted to vacation
somewhere warm for the holiday but options were limited as true
Caribbean/Mexican destinations were off-limits due to the Zika Virus
(I'd like Remy to have a sibling with a normal-shaped head you see.). My
parents joined us (they committed less than 90 minutes after asking!)
and we had a ball hanging out at a posh resort, riding mopeds, and
relaxing together. This photo is at the resort's private beach on the day after Christmas (late enough to have slept in after Remy couldn't figure out what time it was in her crib in the hotel room closet).

2016 is a year many called a dumpster fire, rife with political and social drama. My year, however--our year, was fantastic. Adding Remy to our family has added depth and meaning to an otherwise full and satisfying life. Paul and I have, much to our surprise, naturally snapped into parenting this sweet girl entrusted to us. What a year.

Hello sweet girl,

In two short days you’ll be 12 weeks old. It’s hard to
fathom you’ve been with us so long Remy Ren! We’ve lived on your schedule for
12 weeks and enjoyed (nearly) every second of it. You’ve been the best baby.

You don’t cry without reason. You don’t hate the bath. YOU
SLEEP. You’ve smiled since three weeks. You’ve allowed us to haul you to
Seattle a few times, on an adventurous vacation to Alaska, and to spend some
time with Grandpa and Grandma in Utah. Somehow I knew you’d be a low-key baby
before you were born and you’ve exceeded all of my expectations.

Your arrival into the world wasn’t so easy. Where I thought
you’d come quickly and painlessly, your entry was anything but. Due to a number
of complications including my body rejecting three epidurals (and other pain
medications) and a looooooong, slow delivery; things didn’t go according to
plan and I didn’t feel prepared for two long days of contractions and a natural
birth. Your heartrate suffered at the end (unsurprising as you and I had both
been through so much!) and you were vacuumed out; a good thing as you then had
trouble breathing on your own. It took a few minutes for the doctor and nurses
to get you breathing on your own; there were a few scary minutes but you
quickly started to respond. I cried after you were delivered both because you
were here, but also because the birthing process was simply over. It was fairly
traumatic for us both.

Since the very beginning, you’ve been the prettiest baby.
Your features are petite and your wrists and ankles slim. Most shocking to your
Dad and me was the very full, very dark head of hair you had and continue to
sport. Born at 8 pounds, 8 ounces you still felt so tiny! You were almost 21
inches tall and have been quick to continue growing in height.

Weight gain has been a different story. In the hospital you
were a great eater and quickly put the weight you’d lost back on. At home was
another story. You nursed the right number of times per day for extreme lengths
of time (30-40 minutes per side). It wasn’t until a weigh-in at a fortunate
doctor’s visit, where I feared you had thrush, that the doctor grew concerned
with your weight gain. You’d slipped from the 90th percentile at
birth to the 40th. We began seeing a lactation consultant and it was
discovered you had issue withdrawing milk. My days as an exclusive pumper
began. In your first three days of bottle feeding you put as much weight on as
you had in your first four weeks of life! Since that time you’ve remained
somewhat disinterested in food, but are gradually gaining weight. You’re long
and lean.

Through a series of incredibly fortunate events, your Dad was
home with us the first ten weeks of your life. The three of us have spent
nearly every hour of each day together getting to know each other. We’ve had
the best time! Dad has been an incredible helper; he changes the majority of
your diapers and does the majority of the feedings. You two have a special bond
and I love seeing it develop.

Tomorrow I return to working full time and you’ll begin
spending time at the daycare we’ve chosen. My heart is so divided. I love being
with you Remy; it’s surprised me how much patience I have with you and your
needs, and how natural being your mother feels. Even when it’s Dad’s turn to do
something I can usually be found hovering around you both just watching. I find
myself drawn to you in ways I didn’t know to be possible. And yet, there’s a
need I have to do more, to use the parts of my brain that are so good at what they do. To go back to my
job and provide value and function in a way that is meaningful to me—that fills
me up and makes me feel good about myself.

I don’t know what to expect from my feelings taking you to
daycare tomorrow. Last week I had my first cry as I held you in my arms and
imagined you being in a strangers’. I know you’ll be in good hands (we wouldn’t
ever send you somewhere that wasn’t)
but knowing you won’t always be someone’s first
priority breaks my heart a little. “It’ll build character,” I tell myself, but
still it hurts my heart. If I’m honest with myself I’m also nervous you’ll love
someone more than you do me. I couldn’t handle that.

Remy Ren, Sweetie P, Bitty, Baby Raymi – in the last 12
weeks you have stolen my heart. We spend hours of time together every day and
yet I still find myself missing you when you’re napping or in bed for the
night. I love singing to you, talking in a ridiculously high voice to you, and
serving you. The way you hold my fingers tight and look into my eyes when
you’re eating, the way you break into a smile when I get you up from your crib
(even as the tears haven’t yet dried on your face), the way you still fall
asleep in my arms or on my chest. The smell of your hair, the smoothness of
your skin, and the beginning squeeziness of your thighs; I adore it all.

During each phase of your development I think to myself, “it
can’t get better/cuter than this.” I have thoroughly enjoyed being proven wrong
time and time again.

My dear, sweet baby girl –

I’m currently timing the very labor contractions that could
bring you into the world this Mother’s Day. Technically you’re past due (May 6)
but earlier than either your Dad or I expected. The women in my family have a
history of hosting babies in favorable environments—you and your cousins feel
no huge rush to leave the world and join us!

Your Dad and I are so overjoyed for you to enter the world
and change our lives forever. Your conception and pregnancy have gone better
than expected or planned—I found out I was pregnant one month after we decided
it was time to expand our family and I’ve had the easiest pregnancy in perhaps
the history of the world. (Fingers crossed your labor and delivery follow this
same pattern—I’ll have to report back later.)

I knew in my heart I was pregnant with you the day before I
should have had my period. Your Dad made us wait one day to take a test, but I
knew you were there, you’d remain viable, and we could count on your little
spirit joining our family. We took the test one hour before your aunts Kendall,
Mallory, and I ran in a 200-mile relay race from Mt. Hood to the Oregon coast.
How much I had to think about while spending 32-hours in a van away from your
Dad and unable to tell my best friend/sisters.

We kept the news to ourselves until we had our first
ultrasound at about 8.5 weeks. Dad saw your pixelated beating heart and finally
believed you were a real thing! We told Grandpa, Grandma, and Mallory in the
next few days and Kendall and Alaina a few days later. Everyone else we waited
until 16 weeks; about a month longer than is typical. We loved having a chance
to plan and dream in a vacuum; and since I wasn’t having any regular (and
awful) first trimester symptoms it was easy to keep the secret.

Dad didn’t pass the Oregon State Bar exam the first time he
took it. He was also called as the Ward Mission Leader and I continued to work
full time (in fact, I still am! I’ve planned to work clear up until the time
you join us). Plenty of things didn’t go perfectly during the time we’ve been
waiting for you, but we’ve felt exceptionally blessed in so many ways that has
made life manageable. Dad took the Bar again and passed; he was sworn in as an
Attorney a few weeks ago, friends and my work have thrown you the sweetest baby
showers and now we anxiously await your arrival. (I wish your contractions
would either speed up or slow down; this waiting game is excruciating!)

We’ve had the best 2.5 years as a couple. Dad and I have
traveled, we’ve worked on the house, we’ve cheer-leaded each other through
difficult school, work, and family situations. We are legitimately each other’s
best friend; there’s very little—in fact nothing—we’d
rather do than be together. We waited a long time to find each other and the
wait has been more than worthwhile.

It’s not unusual for either of us to say, “Babe! We’re
having a baby!” Many times a day. For many months. “We’re having a baby girl!”
It still feels hardly real; even as we’ve had your nursery set up and clothes,
gear, and the massive other amount of purchases completed, toured daycares, and
tried to decide on a name.

We know life is going to change, but as yet our brains can’t
quite fathom how much.

Perhaps my biggest worry and unknown in welcoming you into
the world is understanding that life will never be at stasis again. Dad and I
know what to expect from each other, how to be together, how to communicate,
and generally how one day will play out from the next. Once you breathe your
first breath, we’ll have another player to add into the equation; and knowing
how much you’ll grow, change, and continue to refine yourself (hopefully never
stopping!) means the life we know will also continue to grow, change, and
evolve. Let’s all plan to take it one day at a time, shall we?

Baby Girl, we can’t wait to meet you. To hold you and to
love you. You’re going to have the best Dad. He didn’t have the happiest
upbringing and is looking forward to giving you the love he never had. There
are so, so many people anxious for your arrival—grandparents, aunts, cousins,
and our ward family.

I hope you’ll be patient with us. We have such little
experience being parents; you’ll be our guinea pig until we can add a brother
or sister for you. Just remember that we’re doing the best we can; we’re not
perfect but we’re counting on all of us loving each other enough to cut the
others some slack. We’ll do our best to always make you happy, but our primary
job will be to teach you how to be a good person and Child of God. You probably
won’t always agree with the decisions we make, and there are times you’ll think
us mean, or strict, but we know the potential you have and want you to learn
how to live up to it.

We cannot wait to hold you in our arms and show you all the
amazing things life has to offer.

Already I love you so,
Especially when said 'win' was something I've avoided doing for several years, where it's had a permanent place on my To Do list. I'm talking of course, about cleaning out the bathroom cupboards and drawers. Both of them. What a sweet sense of relief to have that terrible job completed.

In addition, we also sorted through the latest tidal wave of stuff deposited in the baby's room/spare room and the gym. Fantastic to be able to see and navigate the floors again; a bit disheartening to know that the contents of both closets have to be completely flipped. And once we're ready to assemble the nursery... yikes. We've got some furniture figuring out to do.

[Sidenote: I'm determined to complete so many house things while I'm feeling good and before the baby comes. Every thing I've read/heard indicates you won't get a thing done during maternity leave, and knowing how lazy I am clearly that sounds like the dream.]

This legitimately might be the most boring blog post of all time. I'm sorry. How about a photo of some of the wonderful wares purchased in Meridian, Idaho of all places? We stopped for the night both to and from Utah for the holidays and found ourselves with several hours to burn (trying to avoid the ghetto-ness of our $60/night rooms). Both trips held the exact same evening itinerary. Texas Roadhouse, Hobby Lobby for nursery prints, Marshalls/TJ Maxx for baby clothes. We hit the jackpot on the way home. These three outfits are Baby Girl's first stylized outfits.

Also this weekend? There were a few Blazers tickets floating around the office late Friday and knowing A) the visiting team (Golden State) is good and B) our time of being free and easy is coming to an end, I scooped them up. Paul came to my end of town where we had a quick happy hour nacho/bean dip deliciousness of a dinner (made even more fantastic by the fact we've been eating crazy healthy since the new year) and then braved the traffic and cold to get to the Moda Center for the Blazers Game.

We had a really great time enjoying the atmosphere, sitting for 99.9% of the game (bless the fact that our seats have no one in front of them and a bar on which to rest your feet), and just talking/laughing together. Oh, and planning out how we'd spend the Powerball lottery winnings should we win them. It's very important to have this stuff figured out before your life changes forever you see.

And now that we have 9:00 church the wide expanse of Sunday afternoon is this delicious thing that typically includes stretchy pants, naps, TV, food, calling-related tasks, and anything else our little hearts desire. Though I loathe waking up 'early', I won't lie about how nice that afternoon is. This Sunday was made extra special by a [TMI ALERT!] 24-hour urine collection I had to complete for a test because though I'm having the easiest pregnancy of all time there's a random hiccup every now and then that requires some attention. (In this case, protein in my last urine test which may require a kidney specialist OR might mean I simply didn't drink enough water before my last test; which duh, my vote is on the latter.)

Shall we call this a weekend brain dump? Okay! NatAttackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04165394783070027371noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27058618.post-84206365787304592322016-01-08T13:29:00.000-05:002016-01-08T13:29:39.981-05:002015: The Recap (as voted on by the public)

Life continues to move, the days feeling long but the weeks speeding by. 2015 was a roller coaster of a year for me and Paul; there were many days in the first part of the year that required a near-daily reminder that we could do hard things and tomorrow was a new day. The specifics of 2015 are included in the yearly write-up he and I put together (offline for all the good, juicy, private stuff) but the passing of the year bears some sort of acknowledgement and recap.

From top left to right, down a row, from left to right: rinse and repeat:

We're expecting a baby! A few fun facts: I really felt like I was pregnant and took a test one hour before leaving for Hood to Coast. Of course it came back positive and Paul and I had about 45 minutes to celebrate together before I was off for two days in a 200-mile nonstop running relay where I couldn't tell anyone; especially my two sisters who were in my van. Paul and I kept texting each other, marveling in excitement, and the thought of the upcoming baby gave my brain something to work through on my few runs. We waited until 16 weeks to tell the general public, and as I'm still hardly showing at six months it could have been kept even bigger of a secret! Also, probably TMI but no one reads blogs anymore, so here goes! Baby Judd was conceived on the first cycle of trying, in Switzerland of all places. (Not a bad start to life.)

Paul passed the Federal Patent Bar test. Ohhhhhhhhhhh was this a big one. He didn't pass on his first go-round, so the pressure was on, and with a 46% pass rate, the test is no walk in the park. In addition to studying for the test he was also finishing law school and being our home operations manager. We both cried when he passed; sadly, I was stuck at work (on a Friday night) until 8pm working on agency rebrand stuff (see difficult turmoil description above) but I can't describe the relief we both felt his passing. Nearly a year later his test score is still taped to the cabinet in our kitchen.

This photo of my four nephews was our public announcement that we're having a GIRL baby. After a four-boy streak in the Wms sisters (Alaina and Kendall's little guys) we're shocking the world by introducing a baby girl into it. Our ward (which we've grown exceptionally close to this year as well) hasn't had a girl in nearly 2+ years as well, so needless to say everyone is very excited. Also, I can't stop buying clothes.

Paul graduated from Law School! Both our sets of parents came into town on Memorial Day Weekend for the Saturday celebration. We hosted a BBQ at our home with friends and family and took visiting parental sets to hike Wachlela Falls. Neither of Paul's parents are college graduates and he's the first of his siblings to get a graduate degree, so basically he's an all-star. (And now all of the Wms daughters are married to men with graduate degrees. Crazy.)

WE WENT TO NEW YORK CITY AT CHRISTMASTIME, it was divine, and I was pregnant. I needed to travel to Boston for some emergency work meetings and it seemed like a good time to take Paul with me and for us to do a quick weekend in NYC (my favorite city on earth). While there we walked 15 and 9 miles each day and the maternity pants I was wearing were saggy enough that they required me to pull them up basically always. Frustrating, but everything else was DIVINE. One of my long-term bucket list items is to be in the City at Christmastime in love, and boy oh boy this trip satisfied that requirement. Maybe this trip will get a post of its own (unlikely but hope springs eternal!) but it was glorious and one of my favorite things Paul and I have done together. (Also, Paul beat ridiculous odds to win lottery tickets to see Hamilton, one of the main reasons for the trip, and my every wish came true, we sat dead center front row, and I basically died.

Athens in front of the Parthenon, in 105+ degree heat. To celebrate our survival of the first half of the year (my work, the Patent Bar, Paul taking the Oregon State Bar), we went on a European Extravaganza Adventure. The first week was an Eastern Mediterranean cruise (Venice, Split and Dubrovnik Croatia, Athens, Ephesus Turkey) with my parents and the second week was Paul and I driving through Bavaria--Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Switzerland. The fact that more of our incredible trip isn't represented on this grid shows you the kind of BIG news we had this year, huh?

In November we celebrated two years of marriage. I love this side by side photo of Paul and I. We were happy then, but we're even happier now! 2015 was also the year I finally got my wedding book printed, so that's clearly an accomplishment of its own.

I continue to decorate our house like a crazy person for Christmas. I love it so much and I'm grateful Paul will help me put it up AND take it down. This year some visiting children counted 18 baby Jesus(es?) so my nativity game continues to be strong. We bought new ones in Germany and Austria this year.

Venice! The first stop on our Euro Adventure (from where our cruise ship embarked) and we hadn't really told that many people we were traveling so I think it was a surprise to most. I've been to several Italian cities, but Venice has been my favorite. We rented an AirBnb apartment 100 feet off the Grand Canal and spoke Spanish with our Cuban renter (in Italy of all places). The world is a funny place.

So there you go! The high points of 2015! So much more bears documentation and we've made a concerted effort to write some of it down. In case you're interested in doing it yourself (which I strongly recommend!), here's the format we complete at the end of each year:

10 Highlights

5 Disappointments

Game Changers

Things You Focused On

Places You Visited

As blogs are going the way of the wind, writing something down, even as simple as the above (which usually ends up being about two type-written pages) is helping us document our life together. It's not a shabby one!

Phew! Did you make it through our year? We did. (Just barely.) NatAttackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04165394783070027371noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27058618.post-52762485924066374532015-10-28T19:08:00.001-04:002015-10-28T19:11:25.905-04:00My husband doesn't like the same TV as me and it's the pitsCruising through the archives of yore, you might notice (or remember all on your own--welcome back dear readers!) that I talk about TV quite a bit. Frankly, a rather absurd amount but you're not here to judge me (unless this is a hate read of yours and then...well, we all have those we like to follow, so why should I fault you yours?) so the conversation continues!

So one day you find yourself married. And the dude you've hitched your wagon to for the next couple hundred million years doesn't care for manufactured drama. Or TV. (Or movies really.) Total bummer.

But he's still taller than I am so I didn't lose everything on my list.

Paul loves me though, and we've found some middle ground. In good news, he wants to spend time with me, so we've reached some compromises. What follows is a list of Paul's tolerance levels for my shows (also, the compromises I've had to make):

Shows Enjoyed Together (no devices allowed)

Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Sherlock
Fresh Off the Boat

Shows Enjoyed Together (devices allowed)

Any and all HGTV shows
The Amazing Race (some day I'll post our audition video)
Longmire
Mindy Project
New Girl
Modern Family
Broadchurch
Orphan Black (seasons 1 & 2, then the boy clones got introduced and we haven't watched since)
Daredevil (where everyone has a Christian Bale Batman voice)

He's Hit or Miss, But Mostly Joins

Grey's Anatomy (the show that will never end)
Empire (too absurd to take seriously)
Downton Abbey (is it ever coming back for another season?)

The Show He Refuses to Watch, Abhors Above All Else

Nashville (sorry Connie Britton; I tried) NatAttackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04165394783070027371noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27058618.post-76923935333644553002015-10-23T18:00:00.002-04:002016-01-11T17:58:59.695-05:00Guess who's back, back again?Remember when everyone used to blog? And we had to tell our stories mostly with words? Those were the days. Earlier this week I took a spin through my last few blog posts and I was like, "Nat! You used to be such a good writer!"

Now the bulk of the writing I do is for work emails. #progress

(Also, hashtags. They're a thing now.)

But I'm thinking about bringing blogging back! Because a lot has changed since I gave up documenting my life three years ago--and that's a dark hole my memory will only be able to remember in photo, which is kind of sad, because I'm a words person!

And now I have a husband! And a house! And full fledged adult responsibilities that require a level of adulting I'm sure has been misplaced (managing a team! managing two sets of full-time missionaries with my ward mission leader husbot!), but I'm doing the best I can.

Because I'll never, ever, ever get back together with the ins and outs of the last three years, this video of Paul and my first 14 months together will have to try and cover some of the distance.
I started writing the night before my 30th and lost patience with the inability to express myself. I don't want to let what I did put together get lost in the shuffle of files on my Desktop, so thanks Blogger (new redesign, what?!) for being the journal I <s>basically quit</s> write in on occasion. The thoughts of my mind will never truly be finished, so here's the snapshot on the last day of 29.

---------------------
It’s not often I feel unable to express the thoughts and feelings and connecting threads of my heart and mind and gut. Tonight, the last night of my twenties, I feel inadequate at the task of compiling my feelings and taking a meaningful stab at portraying the goodness and wonder and un-believability of my life on the eve of my dive into the 30+ age bracket.

For as organized as I am, I’ve never been a long-term planner. I never had a life plan with milestones set by age which has probably allowed me to love the life I’ve been given and the route it took me to get here. The life I live is an accumulation of small scale goals, personal challenges, and blessings from above so rich in abundance that I still can’t quite believe this is my life.

Where my last year has been rife with change of the temporal variety, the last decade has been fraught with self-perpetuated personal change. While I’m fundamentally the same flesh and blood, I hardly recognize the girl I was ten years ago. I've worked really, really hard at refining who I am. I joke with my oldest friends, congratulating them on their high return on investment. Theirs was a long-term gamble whose dividends were hardly worth mentioning in those early years.

My 20's taught me resiliency. Flexibility. Faith. I'm proud of who I've become while recognizing the difficult conversations, the hard inward looks and the patience it took to become a better version of me. The coolest (slash scariest) part is that the process is never really finished. What will I learn in the next ten years?

The first day of my 30th year is welcome; I can’t wait to see what happens next.

------------------------
I will forever mourn the fact I didn't write a 29th birthday letter. I'll blame the packing my Boston life away for that one, but I regret not writing deeply.
(See: checking out the Czech Republic, hiking the death march with Katie in Colorado Springs, visiting the Chinese cemetery in Baker City, camping at Acadia National Park in Maine, singing kareoke with sailors during Fleet Week in New York City, commandeering a beach house in Connecticut.) This weekend proved no different as a friend had a hook-up to a beach house at the coast here in Oregon.

Without a doubt, the long weekend proved to be one of the best of the year. It was colder than any of us would have preferred, but it didn't rain, most of us still managed to get into the crashing surf (even if forced because the losing volleyball team had consequences), and the sun managed to come out on Monday. Any trip where you come home with more color than you left must be deemed a success.

How many years of my life have I been the tallest <s>person</s> girl in my group of friends? Newsflash: I'm the shortie around here now. It's an alternate universe, I'll tell you what. These girls are my favorites:There aren't photos that capture what we spent the majority of our time doing, and that's eating. We brought groceries and foodstuffs for <s>25</s> 15 and only ever had 10 people. Three full meals a day is 1.5 more than I normally eat, plus snacks, and two trips to Mo's and man oh man it's a miracle I didn't come home 10 lbs and/or two sizes larger than I left.
Perhaps my biggest accomplishment of the trip (besides being the first to bed every night... who am I anymore?) was that I got out running two times. Granted, I didn't go very far or very fast, but as someone who's never exercised on vacation, it was a crazy step in the right direction. I'm only sorry I missed the Insanity workout most of the other folks did... I'm running a dumb Half in less than two weeks, and surely you remember that miles are miles and they must be logged.
Though the pictures don't show it, we spent most of our time on the sand playing beach volleyball, inside the house playing games and laughing uproariously, or hip-shaking to the ghetto-thumper playlist we kept cycling through while playing, cleaning, preparing food, etc.

Getting back into the swing of things has been pretty gnarly, I won't lie -- who ever really loves going back to real life? Until last night I thought it rather accidental to be honest.

My grand epiphany came as most are wont to—one thought, then two, then many that appeared from nowhere while walking alone on brick paths reflecting the light of the streetlights, the cobblestones slick with the rain that continued to fall. Have I appropriately painted the picture of Adele’s “Hometown Glory*”? In this case, the description isn’t a cliché—it really happened wandering from work to my hotel; the distance between Seaport and the Back Bay just long enough to make sense of the jumble of thoughts in my mind.

You wouldn’t know because I didn’t announce it very loudly in advance, but I’ve spent the last week in Boston for work. [Enter mixed emotions I’ll try my darndest to explain.]

It’s been five months since I left and I’ve been quieter in the online world. My blog has lain mostly dormant and fewer Facebook photos, updates, comments, etc. have been posted as I’ve spent time bridging the gap between what I affectionately call my Old and New life. My Old life was comfortable and I was doing some incredible things in all areas of my life. I didn’t feel like my soul was in a rut; but the routine of my life most definitely was.

The transition to Portland has been thrilling. I’ve spent my fair share of time feeling anxiously queasy with nerves, attempting to navigate a new social, vocational, and spiritual scene—but I’m learning that those feelings are conquerable with the right attitude and willingness to fake it til you make it. I’ve proved yet again, that people are interested in you if you’re interested in them and that there are incredibly nice, good people everywhere trying to do the right thing. I’ve learned that the presence of hope is a powerful motivator and can be a sustaining force in the face of crippling nostalgia.

In my New life, I wake feeling like anything could happen.

Last night, with the rain and the quiet and the ability to hear my own brain making sense of my week in the City—the City that I still and will always love—I felt the closure I didn’t know I needed on a lengthy chapter of my life I thought I’d already closed. Call it luck or call it Providence, but I was able to spend meaningful time with everyone I wanted to in my brief time (and still manage to squeeze in that pesky thing called work). Relationships with the people I care so very much about were picked right back up and five months of time were erased as soon as hugs and easy-laughs were exchanged. Instead of feeling queasy social unease, I felt like a superstar. I won’t lie… it’s not a bad way to feel. But I’ve been gone five months, and I know how much my life has changed in the last five months and it felt weird that no one knew about it. It was almost too easy, slipping back into the habit and the routine of being here. Those five months could have never happened—but they have, and I like that they have.

I’ve never had doubts about my decision to leave Boston, not once. Outside of my own subjective view, it probably sounds cold—I had a gorgeous life there full of good people who loved and cared about me. (Still do, and are actively vocal about that fact—I’m a lucky girl.) Still, when I received two texts on the same day from two of my new Portland friends asking “When are you coming home?”, the gamut of emotions you guys—I’m incapable of expressing them. My trip to Boston was the round-trip ticket on my decision to leave. I didn’t know I needed to return to come full circle.

Subconsciously, I haven’t felt right talking much about my forward because I hadn’t fully said goodbye to my back. I hope I don’t ruffle any feathers when I say this and you might be shocked if you know how nostalgic of a person I am, but the last week has fully confirmed that there’s nothing left for me in Boston anymore. I will 1,000 percent cherish every memory I have in that place (and keep up the associated relationships that originated in the 617), but the era of my life located there has passed, and my heart no longer resides in Boston. My life is no longer in Boston.

Like I said, the presence of hope is a powerful motivator. And I’m ready to go home.
That I'm not on an extended reprieve from the life I'd known for so long and that a future with new plans and people is starting to coalesce. Of course there are also evenings when I feel like I need to take a hard look at the expectations I have for my new circumstances and readjust my thinking to better reflect reality.

In not so many words, things have been good. When I take the pause to count the days I've actually lived in Oregon (34 to be exact) I'm floored by the progress I've made in terms of people I've met (and remembered), social events I've attended, invitations that have been extended, and opportunities I've had to serve. Thirty-four days is a blink of the eye, so taking the time to reflect has been nothing but a good thing.

My writing might not make much sense--no surprise there, it's hard to sift through and categorize it in my mind. Explaining it becomes less important when I tell you that I'm happy, right?

In sad news, in the last 34 days I lost my dream home in a bidding war, housed a raging flu and bronchial cough that'd hurt your lungs to hear, traveled to San Francisco (yay!) while under the weather, worked some stressful weeks, said some things I shouldn't have said, didn't say some things I should have said, and have yet to exercise one time. To be coming out happy on the far side of that should prove to you that things are better than I'm letting on.

I haven't spoken/text/chat/emailed much with my Boston life. It hasn't been a conscious effort to leave it alone, simply a survival technique to focus on the effort required to move ahead. Thirty-four days doesn't accurately reflect the number of days I feel removed from the people and that place. In some regard, there's a chasm in my brain that separates my lives--but that chasm will be so easy bridged as soon as I come face-to-face with someone whom I love or I step foot into that city I adore.

I feel empowered by hope. Thirty-four days here has given me a pretty good (realistic) look at what my life will be like here in Portland. No, it's not what I imagined it would be during my planning--but I've discovered in this not so short and also very long time, that my success here depends solely on me. It's a bit daunting, and on more than one occasion has felt exhaustingly overwhelming, but if there's one person in this world I trust, it's me. Sink or swim, it's in my hands. I'm grateful that my spiritual faith is not only a catalyst for action but also a comfort in those moments when I'm paralyzed by fear. I have both a hope and faith that things will all work out in the end.

"Work out" yet to be determined, but it's going to be great.NatAttackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04165394783070027371noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27058618.post-49909820100100343412011-12-28T02:12:00.003-05:002011-12-28T02:18:15.906-05:00count on facebook......to sum it up better than i can:

But really. Being out West to celebrate her life reminded me how much and why I love being with my family.

My sass-a-frass niece Adrie was born four months before I moved to Boston five years ago this month. Most of the weekends before I moved were spent with her and it's actually pretty hard to imagine I've lived East the vast majority of her life. Five years later our family has divided and conquered again and again and I've got these two sweet guys. How can I not want to be closer to these guys?

Henry Rex, Adrie, Elliot

True, they all live in Utah and I'll be in Portland, but one time zone is certainly closer than three. I haven't plugged my sister Alaina's photography in quite some time but holy freak is she good! JUST LAST NIGHT!

I have a very short bucket list (of attainable items). I work in the internet (rah! rah! rah!) but through some wild and crazy connections, we're partnering with a company that's pitching a reality fashion television show that already has the backing of one of the major fashion magazines. (My company would be providing the digital support for the show.) SO. I've been to New York City twice in the last three weeks, meeting with insane companies with insane brands and OHMYGOSH is this really happening? Let's just say that dressing for these meetings has been more than a bit intimidating.

Friday I had a meeting in the Empire State Building. IN. IT. I've love love loved NYC as long as I can remember and to have a meeting in the actual building? Oofta. I still can't really believe it. But it went well. Really well. If all goes as well as planned, filming could begin sooner than you'd think and I gleaned a promise from those that matter that I'd get to be on set. Too, too many of my favorite things colliding. I wish I could take you all with me.

I got home from the City just this afternoon after having spent an extra day hanging out with some girls who were on my Holy Land Adventure this summer. It was so lovely catching up, but I spent a few hours in the City by myself yesterday doing some things I've wanted to do for quite awhile including Mood Fabrics, Ground Zero, Battery Park, Century 21, Times Square and Canal Street.
The impressive (for me) part of the whole day was a) how far I walked (still feeling it!) and b) I didn't have a smartphone at my every whim. My battery dies much too much too fast so I relied on my innate sense of direction (seriously, that might be my most marriable skill) and my own two wandering feet to find what I needed. It also meant I wasn't listening to music or reading/texting on the subway or when I sat alone at dinner; but instead I simply got to listen to the sounds of the City. Oh, how I'll miss New York when I head West. But all good things must come to a end.

Until I have to come back out for another big-timey-what-am-I-adding-to-this-meeting meeting. And then the hunt for fashiony fashion clothing begins again. Because it's stressful, but heLLO, it's also very fun.NatAttackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04165394783070027371noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27058618.post-36368552559827594092011-09-14T17:47:00.004-04:002011-09-14T17:51:13.432-04:00home sweet to beComing Soon:

Today is all about the media blitz in sharing my news. I'll hit the five-year mark in Boston and that's when I'll pack it up (pack it in) and head for greener pastures. (ETA: December 25, 2011)

More to come about the move, the decision, and what it all stinking means.

Sidenote: I'll let you know when I figure it out.NatAttackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04165394783070027371noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27058618.post-57218285362099193052011-09-05T17:30:00.002-04:002011-09-05T17:56:54.868-04:00Labor(ious) WeekendThe Motivation Bug(TM) hit me this long weekend which we all know comes around about as often as the Olympics. And in the last three days I have legitimately touched every single thing I own, which is no small feat if you know the stuff sprawl that is my life. For funsies sake, here's a bulleted list!

Before we get started however, a fun legend to help you understand the massive undertaking that constitutes the contents of my closet.

Closet #1 - Pants, folded shirts, under-wares, socks, sweaters, sweatshirts, bathingsuits

Closet #2 - Hanging shirts, dresses, shoes

Hanging Armoire - Blazers, skirts

Armoire cupboards - Exercise clothes, pajamas

And now! On to the bulleted list!

Weed through Closet #1 and make pile of clothes for consignment.

Weed through Closet #2 and add to pile of clothes for consignment.

Throw away old t-shirts, refold exercise clothes, add to pile of clothes.

Sift through the baskets of health/beauty, life stuff. Throw away + organize.

Rummage through the (office-based) bins in my room I pulled out of the storage unit last month. Throw away + organize.

Clean through the contents in my desk. Throw away + organize.

Gather all costumes (whyyyyyyyy do I have so many?) into a single place and put into storage unit. Also in the costume bin, swimsuits and hats. (Unrelated: If our building were burning down, do you think I'd grab this bin?)

Organize and condense bins/boxes in the storage unit.

Return items to TJ Maxx, Target, Marshall's, Sports Authority. (Newsflash: sometimes I have a problem buying things and sitting on them for awhile to see if I'll actually use/wear. I think this makes me a terrible person.)

Two loads laundry.

Tackle the front hall closet that hasn't been touched since we moved in several years ago. FOUND: all my handbags, cardmaking supplies, tennis racket. Review the contents of my 72-hour kit and decide it's probably still mostly good.

Vacuum bedroom.

And then Saturday ended. I think I rested on Sunday but truth be told I can't even really remember. And now Monday's list...

Tackle under the sink in my bathroom. Holy makeup and hair ties. Note to self: never buy hair ties again. In fact, I think I should put some into my 72-hour kit because heaven knows hair ties will be CURRENCY in the Apocalypse because there's nothing worse than hair in your face when you don't want it to be.

Clean bathroom.

Empty the contents of our front room closet which has been a dumping ground for excess paper goods, kitchen gadgets, home decorations, water bottles and coats for the last three years. Organize + throw away. Decide it's time to put out our Halloween decorations. Summer, be gone!

Organize pots & pans cupboard which is a nightmare in 95% of American households, probably yours included.

Wipe down stuff on top of fridge, and you guessed it -- organize and throw away.

Rinse, repeat with food cupboards.

Do dishes in the sink, start dishwasher.

Made bean dip, which at first type wrote as 'beandip'. Why isn't this the acceptable spelling? Oh wait, probably because our brains are programmed to read -and- in the middle of any word and process it incorrectly. Are there words with -and- in the middle (meaning multiple letters on both sides) that look correct? Be and ip. Yes! I'll have some!

And well I think that's it. The only thing I promised myself I'd do this weekend was the self-evaluation for my yearly review. 5:55 on the Monday night of a long holiday weekend. Ask me if it's started. Oh right, definitely not. Weekend totally wasted!
